Who is behind StainWise

StainWise was founded by Michael McCormick, a laundry industry professional with more than 16 years of hands-on experience. Michael is the owner/operator of Habersham Street Laundromat LLC in Savannah, Georgia, where his day-to-day work covers stain removal, commercial and residential laundry, fabric and textile care, and linen management.

That practical background is the reason this site exists and the reason it is organised the way it is. Working with clothing, towels, bedding and linens every day makes it very clear which stains people misjudge, which shortcuts set a mark permanently, and how differently the same treatment behaves on cotton, wool or a synthetic blend.

Why StainWise exists

There is no shortage of stain removal advice online. The problem is that almost all of it assumes you already know what the stain is. In practice, that is exactly the part people cannot answer. A dark ring on a sleeve could be coffee, tea, cola, gravy or old sweat, and those five things want genuinely different treatment — cool water for some, enzymes for others, a solvent for others still. Guess wrong and you often make it permanent.

The second problem is that generic advice ignores the material. The bleach-based trick that rescues a white cotton shirt will ruin a wool jumper or a silk blouse. StainWise was built to close both gaps: help identify the stain first, then give advice that respects the fabric.

How the identification tool works

At a high level: you upload or capture a photo and optionally tell us the fabric. The image and that context are sent to an AI vision model, which assesses visual characteristics such as colour, edge definition, spread pattern and apparent texture, and returns the most likely stain type along with a confidence level and a suggested treatment. StainWise then presents that alongside the safety guidance relevant to the material.

The fabric you select genuinely changes the output, so it is worth providing. If you are not sure of the material, check the care label inside the garment.

AI transparency statement

We deliberately show a confidence level rather than presenting every answer as certain. Where the tool is unsure, the honest response is to say so — a visually ambiguous stain on an unusual fabric is a genuinely hard problem, and pretending otherwise would lead people to damage their clothes.

How our cleaning recommendations are developed

Our written guides are produced by the StainWise editorial team, which operates under the direction of founder Michael McCormick, and are based on established, widely documented stain removal principles: the chemistry of stain categories such as tannins, proteins, oils, pigments and dyes; the way water temperature affects each of those; how surfactants, enzymes and oxygen bleaches differ in what they act on; and the known sensitivities of common fibres. Our commitment to fabric-safe advice

• We never recommend mixing cleaning chemicals. In particular, we never suggest combining chlorine bleach with ammonia, vinegar or other acids, or rubbing alcohol, because those combinations can release hazardous gases.
• We flag the fabrics at risk from any given method, and we treat wool, silk and rayon as requiring caution rather than as afterthoughts.
• We tell you to spot-test, because even a correct method can affect dye on a particular garment.
• We say when to stop and use a professional, rather than pushing a home remedy that could destroy something valuable.
