Rayon and Viscose Care Guide: Washing, Shrinkage and Water Marks

Rayon — sold as viscose, modal, lyocell or bamboo rayon — is a regenerated cellulose fibre. Chemically it is close to cotton, being made from processed wood pulp, but structurally it behaves very differently, and the difference is one that catches almost everyone out.

Rayon loses a large proportion of its strength when wet. A wet rayon garment can tear, stretch or distort under its own weight and under handling that cotton would shrug off. It also shrinks readily and often unevenly, and it is prone to water marks where a wetted area dries at a different rate to the surrounding fabric.

So rayon sits in an awkward middle ground: chemically it tolerates the same treatments as cotton — enzymes, oxygen bleach, mild acids — but mechanically it needs the care you would give silk. Gentle handling is the whole of the skill.

Lyocell and modal are made by more modern processes and are noticeably stronger when wet than traditional viscose, but the same principles apply.

Very absorbent, so stains penetrate quickly and it takes a long time to dry

Many "dry clean only" labels on rayon exist precisely because of the wet-strength problem, not because of chemical sensitivity.

Safe Cleaning Methods

Check the label. If it says dry clean only, follow it — the manufacturer knows how much the fabric will distort.

For washable rayon:

Hand wash in cool water with a mild liquid detergent. Submerge, squeeze gently, and support the whole garment when you lift it. Never wring, twist or scrub.
Machine wash only on a delicate or hand-wash cycle in a mesh bag, with a slow spin.
Support the garment's weight when wet. Lifting a wet rayon dress by the shoulders is how sleeves and seams distort permanently.
Keep washing brief. Prolonged soaking weakens wet rayon further.

For spot treatment, work gently, blot rather than rub, and feather the damp area outwards to reduce the chance of a water mark.

Water Temperatures

Cool (20–30°C) — the correct default for all rayon, and essential for limiting shrinkage
Same temperature for wash and rinse
Avoid warm and hot water — heat drives shrinkage and further weakens the wet fibre

Stain-Treatment Precautions

Handle wet rayon as little as possible. Every extra minute of manipulation while wet risks distortion.
Never scrub or brush. Blot with a soft cloth instead.
Do not stretch the fabric under a running tap. Support it with your palm.
Feather the treated area outwards so it dries evenly and does not leave a ring.
Enzymes and oxygen bleach are chemically safe on rayon, but use short soaks rather than overnight — prolonged wetness is the risk, not the chemistry.
Spot-test acids and solvents. Rayon takes dye well but the dye is not always fast, so alcohol and vinegar can cause bleeding. See safe spot-testing.
Dry promptly. Rayon left damp mildews and weakens.

Products to Avoid

Chlorine bleach, which weakens regenerated cellulose noticeably faster than it does cotton
Prolonged soaking of any kind, including long oxygen bleach soaks
Stiff brushes and vigorous agitation
High-speed spin cycles, which distort and crease wet rayon
Hot water, hot irons and tumble dryers
Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia, vinegar, other acids or rubbing alcohol. These combinations can release toxic gas.

Always follow the product label and garment care instructions. Never mix cleaning chemicals unless the product manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so.

Drying Considerations

Do not tumble dry rayon. Heat and tumbling together cause significant, often irreversible shrinkage.

Press water out gently between two towels. Do not wring.
Dry flat, reshaped to its original measurements, or on a padded hanger for structured pieces.
Reshape while damp — smooth seams, straighten hems, restore the original length and width.
Keep it out of direct heat and strong sunlight.
Dry it fully and reasonably quickly. Rayon is slow-drying and vulnerable to mildew.

Iron rayon slightly damp, on a low setting, on the reverse side. Dry rayon scorches and glazes easily, and high heat weakens the fibre.

Common Stains on Rayon

Rayon is used mainly for dresses, blouses, linings and flowing summer clothing, so the stain profile follows:

Water marks and rain spotting, which are as much a rayon problem as a silk one

Food and drink on blouses and dresses — coffee, red wine, fruit juice
Cosmetics on collars and necklines — foundation, makeup
Oily marks — cooking oil and grease, best started with dry absorbent powder to avoid wetting the fabric unnecessarily

When Professional Cleaning Is Appropriate

Anything labelled dry clean only — with rayon this label usually reflects a genuine distortion risk
Structured, lined or tailored rayon garments, including jackets and pleated skirts
Any garment where fit and drape are critical, since home washing can change dimensions permanently
Set-in stains that would need long soaking, which rayon tolerates poorly
Water marks and uneven shrinkage you cannot correct
Ink, marker, paint or glue, where solvents risk both fibre and dye

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is rayon so much weaker when wet? Water penetrates the regenerated cellulose structure and swells it, temporarily disrupting the bonds that give the fibre strength. It recovers as it dries, but any distortion that occurred while wet is often permanent.

Is viscose the same as rayon? Viscose is the most common type of rayon. Modal and lyocell are also rayons, made by different processes, and both are stronger when wet than standard viscose.

Can I machine wash rayon? Sometimes — check the label. If it is washable, use a delicate cycle, a mesh bag, cool water and a slow spin.

Why did my rayon dress shrink? Heat and agitation. Rayon shrinks readily in warm water and dramatically in a tumble dryer. Wash cool and dry flat.
