Microfibre Care Guide: Cleaning Cloths, Upholstery and Suede-Look Fabric

Microfibre covers two quite different things that both need explaining, because the care advice differs.
Microfibre cleaning cloths are made from extremely fine polyester and polyamide filaments that are split during manufacture, creating a huge surface area and countless tiny hooks. That structure is what lets them grab dust, oil and bacteria without chemicals. It also means they are ruined by anything that fills those spaces — fabric softener is the single worst thing you can do to a microfibre cloth, because it coats the fibres and destroys their ability to pick anything up.
Microfibre upholstery and suede-look fabric uses the same fine synthetic filaments woven into a dense, soft surface. Here the problem is different: the pile shows water marks and pressure marks readily, so cleaning it with too much moisture leaves a stiff patch or a ring that looks worse than the original stain.
Both types share the underlying fibre properties: hydrophobic, oil-attracting, heat-sensitive and prone to holding odour.
Material Characteristics
- Split synthetic filaments (polyester and polyamide) with an enormous surface area
- Highly absorbent for its weight and exceptional at picking up dust and oil mechanically
- Ruined by fabric softener, which clogs the fibre structure permanently
- Thermoplastic — melts, glazes and permanently creases with heat
- Oleophilic — attracts oils, which is useful for cleaning but means oily stains bond firmly
- Holds odour if oils are not properly removed
- Attracts lint from cotton items in the wash
- Upholstery versions water-mark and pressure-mark easily
Safe Cleaning Methods
Microfibre cleaning cloths
- Wash separately from cotton and towels. Microfibre grabs lint from natural fibres and holds it in the split filaments, ruining performance.
- Use a small amount of liquid detergent, or none at all for lightly used cloths. Powder can lodge in the fibre structure.
- Never use fabric softener or dryer sheets. This is the cardinal rule.
- For greasy cloths, pre-soak in warm water with a little clear dish soap, then wash.
- Rinse thoroughly. Residue reduces absorbency as much as softener does.
Microfibre upholstery and suede-look fabric
- Check the manufacturer's cleaning code first. A "W" allows water-based cleaning, "S" requires a solvent-based product, "W/S" allows either, and "X" means vacuum only.
- Vacuum regularly. Most soil on microfibre furniture is dry particulate that lifts out with suction.
- For "S"-coded fabric, use a solvent-based upholstery cleaner or, commonly, isopropyl alcohol applied on a cloth — it evaporates quickly and leaves no water mark. Spot-test in a hidden area first.
- For "W"-coded fabric, use a minimal amount of weak detergent solution on a damp cloth, blotting rather than rubbing.
- Brush the pile back into a uniform direction with a soft brush once dry. This is what removes the residual "clean patch" appearance.
Water Temperatures
- Cold to warm (up to 40°C) for cleaning cloths — warm helps release oils from heavily used cloths
- Cool for upholstery spot cleaning, using as little liquid as possible
- Never hot. Heat melts and glazes fine microfibre filaments, and once the split structure is damaged the cloth no longer cleans.
Stain-Treatment Precautions
- Never use fabric softener on any microfibre item.
- Use as little moisture as possible on upholstery. Over-wetting is the main cause of water rings and stiff patches. Blot, do not saturate.
- Work from the outside of the mark inwards and feather the damp edge outwards so it dries evenly.
- Brush the pile afterwards to restore uniform direction and hide the treated area.
- Degrease oily marks with a little clear dish soap on cloths, or an appropriate solvent cleaner on "S"-coded upholstery. See grease stains.
- Spot-test alcohol and solvents — they can strip upholstery dye. See safe spot-testing.
- Never use chlorine bleach. It degrades the fine filaments and can yellow them.
- Keep temperatures low throughout, including drying.
Products to Avoid
- Fabric softener and dryer sheets — the worst thing for microfibre
- Chlorine bleach
- Excess detergent, especially powder, which lodges in the split fibres
- Hot water, hot dryers and irons
- Stiff brushes on upholstery, which flatten and damage the pile
- Excessive water on furniture, which causes rings and stiffness
- Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia, vinegar, other acids or rubbing alcohol. These combinations can release toxic gas.
Always follow the product label and garment care instructions. Never mix cleaning chemicals unless the product manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so.
Drying Considerations
Air dry microfibre wherever possible. It dries very quickly, so this is rarely inconvenient, and it eliminates all heat risk.
If you tumble dry cloths, use no heat or the lowest setting, and never use dryer sheets. High heat melts the fine filaments together, permanently reducing cleaning ability.
Never iron microfibre. Direct heat glazes and fuses the surface.
For upholstery, dry the treated area with a fan or simply leave it, then brush the pile in one direction once completely dry. Do not sit on a damp cushion — pressure marks set into the pile.

On cleaning cloths
- Accumulated grease and oil, which reduces absorbency until degreased
- Fabric softener residue, which is technically not a stain but the most common cause of a cloth "not working any more"
- Lint pickup from washing with cotton
On upholstery and suede-look furniture

- Food and drink — coffee, red wine, tomato sauce
- Cosmetics — foundation, makeup

When Professional Cleaning Is Appropriate
- Large stains on microfibre furniture, where controlling moisture across a wide area is difficult
- "S"-coded upholstery where you would rather not handle solvents yourself
- Pet urine that has reached the cushion foam, which cannot be resolved by surface cleaning
- Water rings and uneven patches you cannot even out by brushing
- Whole-suite cleaning, where professional low-moisture extraction gives a far more uniform result than spot cleaning
- Microfibre garments that are structured or lined
Frequently Asked Questions
Why has my microfibre cloth stopped absorbing? Almost certainly fabric softener or detergent residue clogging the split fibres, or heat damage from a hot dryer. Wash with a little dish soap and no softener; if the cloth has been melted by heat, it cannot be restored.
Can microfibre cloths be washed with towels? No. Microfibre grabs lint from cotton and holds it, which ruins performance. Wash microfibre separately.
Why does my microfibre sofa have a water mark after cleaning? Because the pile dried unevenly. Dampen a slightly larger area, feather the edges, let it dry fully, then brush the pile in one direction.
Is rubbing alcohol safe on microfibre furniture? It is the standard treatment for "S"-coded microfibre because it evaporates without leaving a water mark. Spot-test first, as it can lift upholstery dye.
Do I need detergent for microfibre cloths? Only a little, and sometimes none. Their cleaning power is mechanical rather than chemical, and residue reduces it.
Can I put microfibre in a hot wash to sanitise it? No. Heat melts the fine filaments. Wash warm at most and rely on the fibre structure plus detergent.
