Polyester Care Guide: Washing, Heat Limits and Oily Stains

Polyester is the most widely used synthetic fibre, and its behaviour is almost the mirror image of cotton. It is hydrophobic — it repels water — so water-based stains like fruit juice and soda often rinse straight out. But polyester is also oleophilic, meaning oil has a genuine chemical affinity for the fibre itself, not just for the gaps in the weave.

That single property explains most polyester frustrations: grease, cooking oil, foundation and motor oil bond to it tightly and frequently leave a shadow after everything else has cleared. It also explains why polyester sportswear smells even after washing — trapped body oils feed odour-causing bacteria.

The second thing to know is that polyester is a thermoplastic. It softens and deforms with heat, and heat permanently sets any residue left in the fibre. Temperature control matters more here than with any natural fibre.

Material Characteristics

  • Hydrophobic — dries quickly, resists water-soluble staining, does not absorb much moisture
  • Oleophilic — attracts and holds oils, greases and silicones
  • Thermoplastic — softens with heat, can glaze, melt or permanently crease
  • Strong and abrasion-resistant, holds its shape, resists shrinkage and creasing
  • Holds odour because trapped body oils are not fully removed by standard detergent
  • Prone to static and to pilling in loosely knitted forms
  • Often blended with cotton, elastane or viscose, which changes the care requirements

Safe Cleaning Methods

Machine washing on a normal or synthetics cycle is fine. Turn printed and performance garments inside out. Use liquid detergent rather than powder, since powders dissolve less readily at the lower temperatures polyester requires, and an enzyme detergent genuinely helps with the body oils and protein that ordinary detergent leaves behind.

For oily marks, the key technique is applying undiluted clear dish soap directly to the stain and letting it dwell 15–20 minutes before washing. One pass is rarely enough on polyester — expect to degrease twice. See pre-treating stains.

Water Temperatures

  • Cold (20–30°C) — the safe default, and essential for protein stains such as blood
  • Warm (40°C) — the practical maximum for most polyester, and the useful temperature for oily stains where warmth lowers viscosity
  • Avoid hot water (above 40–50°C) — heat can set oily residue permanently into the fibre, cause permanent creasing, and damage any elastane content in the blend

The rule of thumb for polyester is that heat is a one-way door: once residue has been heat-set, no amount of degreasing afterwards will fully remove it.

Stain-Treatment Precautions

  • Degrease before washing. Any oily or cosmetic mark needs concentrated dish soap and dwell time first, or the wash cycle will simply set it.
  • Judge results on nearly dry fabric. Oil marks look gone while wet and reappear as the fabric dries.
  • Keep temperatures moderate throughout, including the final wash.
  • Never tumble dry a stained polyester garment. This is the fastest way to make a mark permanent.
  • Skip fabric softener, especially on activewear — it coats the fibre and traps the very oils causing odour.
  • Check for coatings. Waterproof membranes, taped seams and printed graphics are damaged by alcohol, acetone and solvents.

Products to Avoid

  • Chlorine bleach, particularly on any blend containing elastane, which it destroys. It can also yellow polyester rather than whitening it.
  • Acetone and strong solvents on garments with bonded coatings, prints or membranes.
  • Fabric softener on performance and activewear fabric.
  • High heat in any form — hot washes, hot irons, hot dryers.
  • Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia, vinegar, other acids or rubbing alcohol. These combinations can release toxic gas.

Always follow the product label and garment care instructions. Never mix cleaning chemicals unless the product manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so.

Drying Considerations

Polyester dries quickly, so line drying is usually the easiest and safest option and avoids the heat risk entirely. If you tumble dry, use low heat only — high heat can glaze the surface, set permanent creases and, on blends, degrade elastane.

Iron on a low synthetic setting with a pressing cloth, and keep the iron moving. A hot iron in direct contact will melt or glaze polyester, and that damage is irreversible.

Common Stains on Polyester

Water-based stains, by contrast, are usually easy on polyester — prompt cold flushing often removes them completely.

When Professional Cleaning Is Appropriate

  • Technical outerwear with waterproof membranes, taped seams or DWR coatings, which home washing and solvents can ruin
  • Persistent oily shadows on garments you value — professional solvent systems dissolve what household surfactants cannot
  • Pleated, structured or lined polyester garments, where heat and moisture distort the shape
  • Suits and formalwear in polyester or polyester blends
  • Garments already heat-set with a stain, where a professional can advise honestly on what is achievable

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my polyester sportswear still smell after washing? Polyester holds body oils that standard detergent does not fully remove, and bacteria feed on the residue. Use an enzyme detergent, add a vinegar rinse, skip fabric softener, and wash promptly rather than leaving items damp.

Why do grease stains survive the wash on polyester but not cotton? Because polyester is oleophilic — oil bonds to the fibre itself. Cotton merely holds oil in the weave, so it releases more readily.

Can I use hot water to get polyester cleaner? No. Heat sets oily residue permanently and risks glazing and creasing. Warm water plus proper pre-treatment is far more effective.

Is chlorine bleach safe on white polyester? It is best avoided. It can yellow polyester and destroys elastane in blends. Use oxygen bleach with a longer soak instead.

Does polyester shrink? Very little under normal conditions, but high heat can cause permanent shrinkage, creasing and distortion.
