How to Remove Blood Stains From Clothes, Sheets and Upholstery

Blood is a protein stain, and that one fact determines everything about how you treat it. Haemoglobin and the other proteins in blood coagulate when heated — the same irreversible change that happens when you cook an egg. Once coagulated, the protein bonds tightly to fibre and the stain becomes extremely difficult to remove.

This is why the most common mistake with blood is not using the wrong product; it is using warm or hot water. Cold water throughout is not a preference here, it is the rule.

The good news is that fresh blood on a washable fabric, treated with cold water promptly, usually disappears completely.

What You'll Need

  • Cold running water — never warm, never hot
  • White cloths or plain paper towels

  • An enzyme-based pre-treatment or enzyme laundry detergent
  • 3% hydrogen peroxide for white and colourfast washable fabrics

Act Quickly

  1. Blot up excess blood with a dry white cloth. Press and lift.
  2. Rinse the reverse of the fabric under cold running water immediately, letting water push the blood back out the way it entered.
  3. Use only cold water. Not lukewarm. Cold.
  4. Do not rub. Rubbing forces protein deeper into the weave and can abrade the fibre.

Step-by-Step Removal Instructions

  1. Blot away all excess.
  2. Flush the back of the stain under cold running water until the water runs clear. For a fresh stain this alone often removes 80–90% of the mark.
  3. Apply liquid detergent or an enzyme pre-treatment directly to the stain and work it in gently with a fingertip or soft brush.
  4. Let it dwell 15–30 minutes, keeping the area damp. Enzymes need moisture and time.
  5. Rinse in cold water and inspect while wet.
  6. If a brown tint remains on white or colourfast fabric, dab on 3% hydrogen peroxide. It will fizz on contact with blood — that is the peroxide reacting with an enzyme in the blood and is a normal sign it is working. Leave 5–10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Spot-test first, and never use peroxide on wool or silk.
  7. Launder in cold water with an enzyme detergent.
  8. Inspect before drying. Air dry, and only tumble dry once the mark has gone completely.

Removing Blood Stains From Different Fabrics

Cotton and Linen

Polyester

Polyester releases protein reasonably well with cold flushing and enzymes. Its constraint is heat sensitivity, so keep every stage cold and avoid a hot final wash, which can set any residue permanently. See polyester care.

Denim

Flush thoroughly from the reverse and use an enzyme pre-treatment. Avoid hydrogen peroxide on dark or raw denim, which it will lighten. Wash inside out in cold water. See denim care.

Wool

This needs care. Wool is itself a protein fibre, so enzyme detergents will attack the wool as well as the blood and can leave the fabric thin or damaged. Silk

The same restriction applies with less margin for error. Silk is protein, so no enzymes and no bleaching agents. Blot with cold water, then use a trace of pH-neutral detergent applied to a cloth. Work from the outside inwards to avoid a ring. A cold salt-water soak is sometimes tolerated for fresh blood on washable silk, but spot-test. Dry-clean-only silk should go straight to a cleaner. Upholstery

Blot repeatedly with a cloth dampened in cold water — most recoverable blood is still liquid. Then apply a small amount of enzyme cleaner or detergent solution to a cloth, blot, and rinse by blotting with clean cold water. Carpet

How to Remove Dried or Set-In Blood Stains

Dried blood is often still removable, because the protein has hardened but not necessarily coagulated — unless heat has been involved.

  1. Soak in cold water for at least 30 minutes, longer for heavy stains, to rehydrate and soften the protein.
  2. For sturdy fabric, work a paste of salt and cold water into the softened stain and let it sit 20 minutes. Salt helps mechanically loosen dried protein.
  3. Rinse, then apply an enzyme pre-treatment and leave it for 30 minutes to an hour, keeping it damp.
  4. Launder in cold water.
  5. Inspect while damp. On white or colourfast fabric, treat any remaining brown tint with 3% hydrogen peroxide.
  6. For persistent stains on sturdy washables, soak in oxygen bleach for several hours and rewash.
  7. Repeat before allowing any heat near the item.

What NOT to Do

  • Don't use warm or hot water at any stage. This is the most damaging mistake with blood.
  • Don't tumble dry a garment with any remaining shadow.
  • Don't use enzyme products on wool or silk. They digest protein, and those fibres are protein.
  • Don't rub aggressively. Blot and flush instead.
  • Don't use chlorine bleach on blood. Beyond the fabric damage on protein fibres and coloured cloth, it can react with proteins and set a yellowish mark.
  • Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia, vinegar, other acids or rubbing alcohol. These combinations can release toxic gas. Ammonia is sometimes suggested for blood, which makes this warning especially important — never use it alongside or after bleach.
  • Don't use hydrogen peroxide on wool, silk or dark dyes without spot-testing.

Always follow the product label and garment care instructions. Never mix cleaning chemicals unless the product manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so.

Why This Method Works

Proteins are long folded chains held in shape by relatively weak bonds. Heat disrupts that structure and causes the chains to unravel and cross-link with each other and with the fabric — coagulation. Hydrogen peroxide addresses what is left — the iron-containing haem pigment that gives blood its brown residue. It oxidises that pigment and destroys its colour. The fizzing you see is catalase, an enzyme present in blood, rapidly breaking peroxide down into water and oxygen. It is a useful visual confirmation that you are treating blood and not something else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does cold water really matter that much? Yes. It is the single most important factor. Warm water coagulates the protein and can turn a fully removable stain into a permanent one.

Why does hydrogen peroxide fizz on blood? Blood contains catalase, an enzyme that rapidly decomposes hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. The bubbling is that reaction, and it confirms the stain is blood.

Can I remove old blood from a mattress? Partially. Use cold water, an enzyme cleaner and minimal moisture, blotting rather than soaking, because a mattress cannot be rinsed or dried properly. Manage expectations, and consider a professional for large stains.

Is saliva useful on small fresh blood spots? It does contain enzymes and is an old field remedy for tiny spots on fabric you cannot rinse. Cold water and a proper enzyme product are more effective and more hygienic.

What about period stains on sheets? Exactly the same protocol: cold water rinse immediately, enzyme pre-treatment, cold wash, and peroxide on white cotton if needed. Sheets respond very well when they have not been through a hot cycle.

Will vinegar remove blood? Not effectively. Blood needs enzymes rather than acid. Vinegar is useful for tannin stains such as tea and coffee, not protein.
