Wool Care Guide: Safe Washing, Felting and Stain Precautions

Wool is the fabric where most stain-removal advice becomes actively dangerous, and it is worth understanding exactly why.
Wool is a protein fibre made of keratin — chemically far closer to your own hair than to cotton. That has two immediate consequences. First, enzyme detergents attack wool itself: the proteases that break down blood, food and sweat protein cannot tell the difference between the stain and the fibre, and repeated use leaves wool thin, weak and rough. Second, alkalis and chlorine bleach degrade keratin, causing yellowing, harshness and irreversible fibre damage.
The third risk is purely physical. Wool fibres are covered in microscopic overlapping scales. When wool is agitated in warm water, those scales interlock and cannot be separated again — this is felting, and it is what turns a jumper into a small stiff board. Felting is permanent. No treatment reverses it.
So wool needs the opposite of the vigorous approach that works on cotton: cool water, minimal movement, no enzymes, no bleach.
Material Characteristics
- Protein (keratin) fibre, vulnerable to enzymes, alkalis and chlorine bleach
- Scaled surface that felts irreversibly with agitation, heat and moisture combined
- Naturally water-repellent on the surface but very absorbent internally — it holds up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet
- Naturally soil-resistant: dry soil and dust often brush straight off, which is genuinely useful for mud and pollen
- Naturally odour-resistant and self-freshening with airing
- Elastic and resilient, recovering from creasing well
- Weak when wet and prone to stretching under its own weight
- Susceptible to moth damage, particularly where food or sweat residue remains
Cashmere, merino, lambswool, alpaca and mohair all behave the same way and need the same precautions.
Safe Cleaning Methods
Wash wool as little as possible. Airing a garment overnight removes most odour, and brushing removes most dry soil. Over-washing does more damage to wool than wearing it does.
When washing is necessary:
- Hand wash in cool water with a wool-specific, pH-neutral, non-enzymatic detergent. Submerge, squeeze gently a few times, and leave to soak briefly. Do not rub, twist, wring or scrub.
- Machine wash only on a dedicated wool or hand-wash cycle, which uses minimal agitation and a slow spin. Use a mesh bag for knitwear.
- Rinse in water at the same temperature as the wash. Sudden temperature changes shock the fibre and encourage felting.
- Support the weight when lifting wet wool. Never hold a wet jumper by the shoulders — it will stretch out of shape permanently.
For spot treatment, blot only. Rubbing a wet wool surface felts it locally, and that dull fuzzy patch is often more visible than the original stain.
Water Temperatures
- Cool (20–30°C) — the only safe range for washing wool
- Consistent temperature between wash and rinse — the change matters as much as the temperature itself
- Never use hot water. Heat plus moisture plus movement is exactly the combination that causes felting and shrinkage.
There is no stain that justifies raising the temperature on wool. If cool water and a wool-safe detergent will not shift it, the next step is a professional, not more heat.
Stain-Treatment Precautions
- Never use enzyme detergents or enzyme pre-treatments. This rules out the standard approach for blood, vomit, pet urine and chocolate — on wool, use cool water and a wool-safe detergent only, and go to a professional for anything significant.
- Never use chlorine bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Both damage keratin and cause yellowing.
- Blot, never rub. Any friction on damp wool risks permanent felting.
- Absorbent powder is your best friend. For grease, cooking oil and motor oil, applying cornflour or talc to completely dry fabric and leaving it several hours involves no water, no heat and no chemistry — the safest effective treatment wool has.
- Brush dry soil off before adding any liquid. Wool's scaled surface releases dry particles well.
- Spot-test acids and solvents. Diluted vinegar and isopropyl alcohol are sometimes tolerated in tiny amounts on a cotton bud, but both can move wool dyes. See safe spot-testing.
- Beware alkaline stains. Decomposing pet urine becomes alkaline and genuinely damages wool fibre and dye — act fast and get professional help for rugs.
Products to Avoid
- Enzyme detergents and "biological" detergents — they digest the fibre
- Chlorine bleach — severe damage and yellowing
- Hydrogen peroxide and strong oxidisers
- Strong alkaline cleaners, including many general-purpose household sprays
- Hot water and hot drying in any form
- Excess mechanical action — scrubbing, wringing, stiff brushes, high-speed spinning
- Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia, vinegar, other acids or rubbing alcohol. These combinations can release toxic gas.
Always follow the product label and garment care instructions. Never mix cleaning chemicals unless the product manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so.
Drying Considerations
Never tumble dry wool. Heat and tumbling together cause felting and shrinkage, and the damage cannot be undone.
Instead:
- Press the water out gently between two towels. Do not wring.
- Dry flat, reshaped to its original dimensions, on a clean dry towel or a mesh rack.
- Keep it away from direct heat, radiators and strong sunlight, all of which make wool brittle and can yellow it.
- Turn the garment and change the towel partway through to speed drying evenly.
Never hang wet wool on a hanger or a line — its own weight will stretch it permanently out of shape.
Store wool clean, dry and folded rather than hung, and keep it away from moths. Residual food and sweat residue is what attracts them, which is another reason to clean wool before long-term storage.
Common Stains on Wool
- Sweat and body oil in underarms and collars — see sweat stains. Sweat salts genuinely damage wool over time, so regular gentle cleaning protects the garment.
- Food and drink on jumpers and coats — coffee, red wine, chocolate. Blot, use cool water and wool-safe detergent, and expect to need a professional for anything substantial.
- Cosmetics on collars and scarves — foundation, lipstick, makeup
- Oily marks — grease and cooking oil, best handled with dry absorbent powder
- Outdoor soil — mud, tree sap and pollen on coats. Dry brushing and tape-lifting work well.
- Pet accidents on wool rugs — see pet urine stains. This is urgent, because urine's alkalinity damages wool dye and fibre.
When Professional Cleaning Is Appropriate
For wool, professional cleaning is often the first choice rather than the fallback:
- Any protein stain — blood, vomit, urine, dairy — where enzymes would normally be used
- Suits, tailored jackets, coats and lined garments, where home washing distorts structure and interfacing
- Cashmere and fine knitwear you want to keep long-term
- Wool rugs and carpets, especially oriental rugs, where urine or heavy staining risks permanent dye damage
- Anything dry-clean-only labelled, which covers most structured wool
- Any stain you have already tried once without success — a second amateur attempt on wool usually causes more harm than the stain

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I use an enzyme detergent on wool? Because wool is protein and enzyme proteases break down protein. They cannot distinguish the stain from the fibre, so repeated use leaves wool thin, weak and rough.
Can felted or shrunken wool be fixed? No. Felting is a permanent mechanical interlocking of the fibre scales. Some very gently stretched pieces can be reshaped slightly while damp, but true felting is irreversible.
Is hand washing really better than a wool machine cycle? Both work. A dedicated wool cycle uses minimal agitation and a slow spin and is perfectly safe. Hand washing simply gives you more control.
How often should wool be washed? Rarely. Air it between wears and brush off dry soil. Most wool garments need washing only a few times a season.
Can I use vinegar on wool? Sometimes, heavily diluted and spot-tested first, for antiperspirant deposit or as a rinse. Avoid it on wool with unstable or printed dyes.
Why does my wool jumper smell after being wet? Damp wool has a natural odour that usually disappears once fully dry. A persistent smell means residue remains — but resist hot water; use a wool-safe detergent and dry flat and thoroughly.
