Pet urine is the household stain where the visible mark is the least important part. Urine contains urea, uric acid, creatinine, salts and proteins. As it dries, the urea breaks down and bacteria convert it to ammonia — the sharp smell — while uric acid forms crystals that bond to fibres and are only slightly water-soluble.
Those crystals are why urine odour famously "comes back". You clean the spot, it smells fine for a week, then on a humid day the smell returns as full force. Moisture reactivates crystals that ordinary detergent never removed. This is also why masking products fail and why, for cats especially, residual odour marks the spot as an acceptable toilet and invites repeat accidents.
Only one class of product genuinely solves this: a proper enzyme cleaner, given enough contact time.

Act Quickly
- Blot up every bit of liquid before it soaks into padding. Press hard with thick towels; stand on them if it is a carpet. The urine you remove now is urine you never have to deodorise.
- Rinse with cold water and blot again, repeating until you are lifting mostly clear moisture.
- Do not use hot water. Heat sets the protein component and can drive odour deeper into backing.
- Do not use an ammonia-based cleaner. Urine already smells of ammonia; adding more can signal to a pet that this is the right place to go again.
Step-by-Step Removal Instructions
- Blot thoroughly with dry towels.
- Rinse with cold water and blot repeatedly. Avoid flooding the area — you are trying to dilute and lift, not push urine into the padding.
- Apply the enzyme cleaner generously. Use enough to reach as deep as the urine went, which for carpet means saturating past the surface into the backing. Under-applying is the most common mistake.
- Let it dwell as long as the product label specifies — usually several hours, sometimes overnight. Enzymes are catalysts that need time and moisture to break the compounds down. Cover the area with a damp towel or plastic sheet to slow evaporation.
- Blot the excess and allow the area to air dry completely. Use a fan.
- Once dry, sprinkle baking soda, leave several hours, and vacuum, to absorb any residual odour.
- Check with a UV torch in a darkened room. Dried urine fluoresces, so you can see whether you have missed any area — and whether the mark is larger than it appeared.
- Repeat if odour persists on a humid day. Deep or repeated soiling often needs two full enzyme treatments.

Carpet
The hardest case, because urine passes through the pile into the backing and often the underlay. Blot, rinse, then saturate with enzyme cleaner to the same depth the urine reached. How to Remove Dried or Set-In Pet Urine
Dried urine means uric acid crystals, and crystals need enzymes rather than rinsing.
- Locate the full extent with a UV torch — dried marks are usually larger than they look.
- Rehydrate the area with cool water so the enzyme cleaner can penetrate; dry crystals resist treatment.
- Saturate with enzyme cleaner to the depth of the original soiling.
- Cover to keep it damp and leave for the full time on the label, often overnight.

What NOT to Do
- Don't use an ammonia-based cleaner. It smells like urine to a pet and can encourage repeat marking.
- Don't use chlorine bleach on urine. It does not remove uric acid crystals, damages many fabrics, and bleach plus the ammonia in decomposing urine is a genuinely hazardous combination that can release chloramine gas.
- Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia, vinegar, other acids or rubbing alcohol.
- Don't use a steam cleaner on urine. Heat sets the protein and can permanently bond odour to fibre. Clean with enzymes first; steam only afterwards if at all.
- Don't rely on scented sprays or carpet powders. They mask odour while the crystals stay put.
- Don't under-apply enzyme cleaner or rinse it out early. Insufficient quantity and insufficient dwell time are the two reasons enzyme treatment "doesn't work".
- Don't use enzyme cleaners on wool or silk.

Why This Method Works
Urine is a mixture, and each component behaves differently. Urea and salts are water-soluble, so prompt blotting and rinsing removes them easily — that is why fresh accidents are far simpler than old ones.
Uric acid is the problem. It is only slightly soluble in water and forms crystalline deposits that bind to fibre. Rinsing physically cannot lift them and detergent cannot dissolve them, which is exactly why cleaned spots still smell months later: humidity dissolves a little of the crystal surface and releases odour compounds again.
Enzyme cleaners solve this differently. They contain enzymes — biological catalysts — that break the specific molecules apart: uricase acts on uric acid, proteases on proteins, and the products of that breakdown are small, water-soluble and odourless. Because enzymes are catalysts working on molecules they physically contact, two conditions are non-negotiable: they must reach every part of the deposit, and they must stay wet long enough to complete the reaction. Vinegar has a limited role. Its acidity neutralises some alkaline odour compounds, which reduces smell temporarily, but it does not break down uric acid. Treat it as first aid, not a solution. Baking soda absorbs airborne odour after the enzymes have done the real work.
