How to Remove Sweat Stains and Yellow Underarm Marks

Sweat stains confuse people because sweat itself is nearly colourless. The yellow marks that build up in the underarms of white shirts are not simply "dried sweat" — they are the result of sweat proteins and body oils reacting with aluminium salts from antiperspirant, plus fabric softener residue, all baked in over repeated hot wash and dry cycles.

That is why the usual instinct — chlorine bleach on a white shirt — often makes things visibly worse. Chlorine reacts with the protein and aluminium residue and can deepen the yellow rather than lifting it. Understanding what the stain actually is changes the whole approach.

There is a second, different problem: coloured or dark fabric with stiff white or grey patches, which is antiperspirant build-up rather than discolouration. That needs a mildly acidic treatment, not bleach.

Act Quickly

Sweat stains are cumulative rather than sudden, so "acting quickly" means changing habits rather than sprinting to the sink.

  1. Don't leave worn shirts in a pile. Sweat residue oxidises and reacts with antiperspirant over days. Rinse or wash promptly.
  2. Rinse the underarm area in cool water if you cannot wash the garment immediately.
  3. Wash in cold or warm water, not hot. Heat sets the protein component and accelerates yellowing.
  4. Let antiperspirant dry fully before dressing. Transferring wet product onto fabric is the main cause of build-up.

Step-by-Step Removal Instructions

For yellow discolouration on washable fabric:

  1. Turn the garment inside out so you are treating the side in contact with skin.
  2. Apply an enzyme pre-treatment or liquid detergent to the yellowed area and work it in with a soft brush.
  3. Leave 30 minutes, keeping it damp. Enzymes break down the protein and body-oil component underneath the discolouration.
  4. Rinse in cool water.
  5. Soak in an oxygen bleach solution, mixed per the product label, for four hours to overnight. This is the step that clears the yellow. It works slowly, so long contact time matters far more than scrubbing.
  6. Launder in cool to warm water with an enzyme detergent. Skip fabric softener — it leaves residue that traps future sweat.
  7. Inspect while damp. For white cotton only, dab any remaining yellow with 3% hydrogen peroxide, leave 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
  8. Air dry, ideally in daylight for whites, which helps fade residual yellow.

How to Remove Dried or Set-In Sweat Stains

Set-in underarm yellowing is a layered stain: oxidised protein, body oil, aluminium deposit and often softener residue.

  1. Pre-treat with an enzyme product and leave one hour, keeping it damp — this tackles the oil and protein layers that block everything else.
  2. Rinse, then soak overnight in oxygen bleach.
  3. Launder without fabric softener.

  • Don't use chlorine bleach on yellow underarm stains. It can react with protein and aluminium residue and deepen the yellow, and it weakens fibre.
  • Don't wash sweaty items in hot water. Heat sets the protein component.
  • Don't use fabric softener on sportswear or shirts prone to yellowing. It coats fibres and traps body oil and odour.
  • Don't combine vinegar and baking soda in one treatment — they cancel each other out.
  • Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia, vinegar, other acids or rubbing alcohol. These combinations can release toxic gas.
  • Don't scrub hard at the underarm. That area is already stressed by movement, and abrasion causes thinning.
  • Don't apply antiperspirant then dress immediately. Wet product transfer is the root cause of build-up.
