Cotton Care Guide: Washing, Temperatures and Stain Treatment

Cotton is the fabric most people own most of, and for stain removal it is the best-case scenario. It is a cellulose fibre — a plant-based carbohydrate — which means it tolerates a wider range of cleaning chemistry than any other common textile. Acids, alkalis, enzymes, oxygen bleach and, on whites, chlorine bleach are all usable within sensible limits.
Cotton's one significant weakness is the flip side of its greatest strength: it is highly absorbent, holding up to around a quarter of its own weight in water. That means liquid stains penetrate deep into the yarn very quickly, so prompt treatment matters. It also means cotton shrinks and creases readily, and stays wet for a long time.
Material Characteristics
- Absorbent and breathable, which makes it comfortable but also quick to take up staining liquid
- Strong when wet — actually stronger wet than dry, unlike linen or rayon — so it withstands scrubbing and wringing
- Prone to shrinkage, particularly on the first wash and in high heat
- Creases easily unless blended or treated
- Chemically robust: unaffected by mild acids and alkalis, and safe with enzyme detergents
- Vulnerable to prolonged strong acid and to mildew if left damp
Mercerised cotton has been treated to improve strength and lustre; sanforised cotton has been pre-shrunk. Organic and unbleached cotton behaves the same way but may shrink more on the first wash.
Safe Cleaning Methods
Machine washing is fine for the vast majority of cotton. Turn printed or dark garments inside out to protect the surface, and use a normal cycle for sturdy items or a gentle cycle for finer weaves such as poplin, voile and lawn.
Cotton takes vigorous treatment well. You can brush a stain, flush it under a running tap, soak it overnight and repeat all of it without damaging the fibre. That tolerance is why cotton has the best outcome for almost every difficult stain — mustard, permanent marker and rust included.
Water Temperatures
- Cold (20–30°C) — coloured cotton, anything at risk of dye bleeding, and every protein stain. Cold water is essential for blood, vomit and dairy-based stains, because heat coagulates protein and sets it permanently.
- Warm (40°C) — the practical default for most cotton, and the right choice for oily stains like grease and cooking oil, where warmth lowers viscosity and helps surfactants work.
- Hot (60°C and above) — white cotton towels, bedding and underwear where hygiene matters. Expect shrinkage and gradual fading, and never use hot water before a stain has been fully removed.
New cotton garments shrink most on their first wash. If fit is critical, wash cold the first time.
Stain-Treatment Precautions
- Treat quickly. Cotton's absorbency means a liquid stain reaches deep into the yarn within seconds.
- Flush from the reverse. Pushing a stain back out the way it entered is far more effective than driving it through the weave.

- Spot-test on coloured cotton. Dyed cotton is not always colourfast, particularly deep reds, indigo and black. See safe spot-testing.
- Sunlight helps on white cotton. Ultraviolet light degrades many organic pigments, which is why drying a damp, treated white cotton item in daylight clears the last trace of tomato sauce, mustard or rust. Avoid it on coloured cotton, which fades.
Products to Avoid
- Chlorine bleach on coloured cotton — it strips dye permanently. On white cotton it works, but it weakens the fibre with repeated use, so oxygen bleach with a longer soak is usually the better choice. See oxygen bleach vs chlorine bleach.
- Chlorine bleach on rust — it can set iron oxide permanently. Rust needs acid, not bleach.
- Prolonged strong acid. Cotton tolerates vinegar and lemon juice for short treatments, but leaving concentrated acid on the fabric for hours weakens cellulose.
- Excess fabric softener, which coats fibres, reduces absorbency in towels, and traps body oils and odour.
- Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia, vinegar, other acids or rubbing alcohol. These combinations can release toxic gas.
Always follow the product label and garment care instructions. Never mix cleaning chemicals unless the product manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so.
Drying Considerations
Cotton shrinks mainly through heat and mechanical action in the dryer. To limit it, tumble dry on low or medium and remove items slightly damp, or line dry. Heavy items like towels and jeans hold a lot of water and take a long time to air dry, so allow for that in humid conditions — cotton left damp for too long develops mildew, which stains and weakens the fibre.
Hanging shirts damp and smoothing the seams reduces ironing considerably. Iron cotton damp, on a medium to high setting; it tolerates more heat than any other common fibre.
Common Stains on Cotton
Cotton absorbs everything, so it sees the full range. The most frequent are:
- Tannin stains — coffee, tea, red wine, fruit juice. Cotton is particularly susceptible because tannin has a natural affinity for cellulose.
- Protein stains — blood, sweat. Cold water and enzyme treatment; cotton handles enzyme detergents safely.
- Oily stains — grease, cooking oil, chocolate. Absorbent powder first, then degreasing.
- Yellow underarm marks on white shirts, from sweat reacting with antiperspirant.
- Outdoor marks — grass and mud on school and work clothing.
When Professional Cleaning Is Appropriate
Most cotton needs no professional help, but consider it for:
- Tailored and lined cotton garments — jackets, structured shirts and anything with interfacing, where home washing distorts the shape
- Heirloom and vintage cotton, including christening gowns and old table linen, where the fibre may already be weakened
- Large or old stains on items you value, where professional solvent systems reach what home methods cannot
- Cotton with a special finish — waterproofed, waxed or crease-resistant treatments that home washing can strip
Frequently Asked Questions
Does cotton always shrink? Most shrinkage happens on the first wash and in high heat. Pre-shrunk (sanforised) cotton shrinks very little. Washing cold and drying on low largely prevents it.
Can I use chlorine bleach on white cotton? Yes, but it weakens the fibre over time and it is the wrong choice for rust or sweat yellowing. Oxygen bleach with a long soak is safer and often more effective.

Why does my cotton towel feel less absorbent? Fabric softener residue. Wash without softener, and add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse to strip the build-up.
