How to Remove Permanent Marker From Clothes and Fabric

Permanent marker is the household stain where honesty matters most: it is called permanent because it is designed to be. A typical marker contains dye dissolved in an alcohol or other organic solvent, plus a resin binder that fixes the dye to a surface as the solvent evaporates. On fabric, that means dye locked into the fibre behind a resin film — precisely the design goal.
That does not make it hopeless. On cotton, marker can often be reduced dramatically or removed entirely with patience. On synthetics and delicates, expect improvement rather than a guaranteed clean result. Anyone promising certainty here is overpromising.
The method mirrors ink removal but needs more solvent contact, more repetition, and far more backing cloths.
What You'll Need
- Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol — the primary solvent, the higher the concentration the better
- Clear dish soap
- Liquid laundry detergent

Act Quickly
- Do not rub and do not add water. Water spreads marker dye without dissolving the resin, enlarging the mark.
- Blot any wet excess with a dry paper towel.
- Place a thick pad of white cloth beneath the fabric immediately. With marker, the backing cloth is the removal mechanism — dissolved dye leaves through it or it goes sideways into your garment.
- Treat while fresh. Once the solvent in the marker has evaporated and the resin has cured, the job becomes considerably harder.
- Never tumble dry an item with marker on it.
Step-by-Step Removal Instructions
- Lay the fabric flat with a thick pad of white cloth directly under the stain.
- Apply isopropyl alcohol to a cotton bud and dab the mark from the outside inwards. Let it sit 20–30 seconds so the solvent can soften the resin binder.
- Blot firmly onto the cloth beneath. You should see dye transferring. That transfer is the entire point.
- Change the backing cloth the moment it shows colour. A saturated cloth pushes dye straight back into the fabric — the single biggest cause of failure.
- Repeat. Expect fifteen or twenty cycles of dab, dwell, blot, change cloth. Progress is gradual and that is normal.
- When transfer stops, apply clear dish soap and work it in gently. Leave 20 minutes to remove residual resin and solvent.
- Rinse in cool water.
- Launder at the warmest temperature the care label allows.
- Inspect while damp. Soak sturdy washables in oxygen bleach per the product label for several hours to overnight, then rewash. On white cotton only, a dab of 3% hydrogen peroxide clears remaining tint.
- Repeat the whole sequence before giving up. Do not apply heat at any point until the mark has gone.
Removing Permanent Marker From Different Fabrics
Cotton

Polyester

How to Remove Dried or Set-In Permanent Marker
Once the resin has cured, the solvent needs time rather than force.
- Place a thick fresh pad of white cloth beneath the mark.
- Apply alcohol and let it dwell a full 60 seconds before blotting, so it can soften cured resin.
- Repeat many times, changing cloths constantly. Twenty cycles is not unusual.
- Degrease with dish soap and leave 30 minutes.
- Launder, then inspect while damp.
- Soak sturdy washables in oxygen bleach overnight; finish white cotton with hydrogen peroxide.
- Repeat the full cycle two or three times over successive days if the item matters. Marker often lightens in stages rather than all at once.

What NOT to Do
- Don't rub. Marker dye spreads readily and rubbing embeds resin further.
- Don't add water first. It spreads dye without dissolving the binder.
- Don't reuse a coloured backing cloth. It redeposits dye into the fabric.
- Don't flood the area with solvent. Small repeated applications are more effective and safer for dye.
- Don't tumble dry until the mark is gone.
- Don't use chlorine bleach on wool, silk, spandex blends or coloured fabric. On white cotton it may lighten marker, but oxygen bleach with a long soak is safer and usually as effective.
- Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia, vinegar, other acids or rubbing alcohol. Alcohol is central to this method, so keep bleach entirely separate and rinse thoroughly between treatments.
- Don't use acetone or nail polish remover on acetate, triacetate or modacrylic — it dissolves those fibres.
- Don't use hairspray. Modern formulas are low in alcohol and add polymers that worsen the mark.
- Don't use petrol, white spirit or paint thinner on clothing. They are flammable, hazardous to breathe and damage many fibres and dyes.

Why This Method Works
A permanent marker is essentially a dye delivery system with a built-in fixative. The barrel contains dye dissolved in a volatile organic solvent along with a resin. When the marker touches a surface, the solvent carries dye into the material and then evaporates, leaving the resin to harden around the dye and bond it in place. Water-based cleaning fails because neither the dye nor the resin is water-soluble, and there is nothing for a water rinse to grip.
Isopropyl alcohol works because it is chemically similar to the marker's own solvent. It re-dissolves the resin binder and remobilises the dye, effectively returning the stain to the liquid state it arrived in. This is why higher-concentration alcohol outperforms diluted versions, and why dwell time matters — the solvent must penetrate a cured film before it can act.
Redissolving is only half the job. A mobile dye will travel wherever the liquid goes, which is why the absorbent pad beneath the fabric and the inward blotting motion are the actual removal mechanism rather than technique advice. Capillary action pulls the dye-laden solvent downward into the pad; if that pad is already saturated with dye, the gradient reverses and colour flows back into the garment. Changing cloths constantly is therefore the difference between success and a larger stain.
Dish soap then emulsifies the remaining resin and oily residue so it can be rinsed away. Finally, oxygen bleach and hydrogen peroxide oxidise whatever dye remains chemically bound, breaking the chromophore so the colour disappears without the molecule needing to leave the fibre.
