How to Remove Grease Stains From Clothes and Fabric

Grease is the stain that most reliably survives a wash and then reappears once the garment dries. There is a straightforward reason: oil and water do not mix. Water is polar, grease is non-polar, so a water-based wash cycle has no chemical route to carry grease away unless a surfactant is there to bridge the gap — and at machine dilution, ordinary detergent frequently is not concentrated enough for a set greasy patch.

The classic symptom is a mark that looks gone while the fabric is wet, because water temporarily fills the fibre and evens out the light. As it dries, the oil-soaked area reflects light differently and the dark patch returns.

Grease also darkens over time as it oxidises, so an old cooking splash on a shirt can become a permanent-looking brown-grey shadow. Treat it early and the odds are much better.

What You'll Need

  • Talcum powder, cornflour, baking soda or plain chalk — an absorbent for fresh grease

Act Quickly

  1. Blot up excess oil with a paper towel. Press, don't wipe.
  2. Lift solid fat — butter, lard, dripping — with a dull edge before it melts further into the weave.
  3. Cover the mark with an absorbent powder. Cornflour, talc or baking soda draws liquid oil out of the fibre. Leave it 15–30 minutes, then brush it away. This step alone removes a surprising proportion of a fresh stain.
  4. Do not add water yet. Water spreads the oil sideways and does nothing to dissolve it.
  5. Do not tumble dry. Heat oxidises the oil and sets it into the fibre.

Step-by-Step Removal Instructions

  1. Blot excess and lift any solid fat.
  2. Apply an absorbent powder generously and leave 15–30 minutes. Brush off thoroughly.
  3. Degrease. Apply clear dish soap directly onto the mark — undiluted — and work it in with a fingertip or soft brush. Leave 15–20 minutes. This is the essential step, and dish soap is better than laundry detergent here because it is formulated to cut cooking grease at low dilution.
  4. Rinse from the reverse of the fabric with the warmest water the care label allows. Warmth helps here, unlike with protein stains, because it lowers the oil's viscosity so surfactants can lift it.
  5. Inspect while wet, then again after partial drying — a greasy shadow is easiest to judge on nearly dry fabric.
  6. Repeat the degreasing step if any darkness remains. Two or three passes on a set stain is normal.
  7. Apply liquid detergent and launder at the warmest temperature the care label allows.
  8. Check before drying. Air dry and inspect in good light. If a shadow persists, degrease and rewash.

Removing Grease Stains From Different Fabrics

Cotton

Polyester

The most difficult common fabric. Polyester is oleophilic — it has a genuine chemical affinity for oil — so grease bonds to the fibre rather than merely sitting in the weave. Denim

Wool absorbs oil readily. Lift solids, apply absorbent powder while dry — this is genuinely the best step for wool, since it needs no water — then use cool water with a wool-safe detergent. Silk

High risk. Silk water-rings easily and cannot take bleach, while oil leaves a dark translucent mark that genuinely needs degreasing. The safest home step is absorbent powder applied dry and left several hours, then brushed away. Upholstery

Absorbent powder first, left as long as practical, then vacuum. Follow with a weak dish soap solution applied on a damp cloth rather than poured, blot, and rinse by blotting with clean water. How to Remove Dried or Set-In Grease Stains

Old grease has oxidised and polymerised slightly, which is why it darkens and clings.

  1. Apply absorbent powder even to an old mark; it still draws out some mobile oil. Leave a few hours.
  2. Apply undiluted dish soap and leave 30 minutes to an hour, keeping it moist.
  3. Rinse from the reverse with warm water.
  4. Repeat the degreasing step at least twice. On a set stain, repetition is the whole method — force and heat are not substitutes.
  5. Launder warm, then inspect once nearly dry.
  6. Soak sturdy washables in oxygen bleach for several hours to clear any residual brown cast, then rewash.

What NOT to Do

  • Don't rinse fresh grease with water first. Water spreads oil without dissolving it. Absorb, then degrease.
  • Don't tumble dry a greasy garment. Heat oxidises the oil and sets it permanently.
  • Don't assume the stain is gone because it looks clean when wet. Always judge a grease mark on nearly dry fabric.
  • Don't use chlorine bleach on grease. It does not dissolve oil, and it damages wool, silk, elastane and coloured fabric.
  • Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia, vinegar, other acids or rubbing alcohol. These combinations can release toxic gas.
  • Don't scrub aggressively. Repeated gentle degreasing beats one hard scrub, which only abrades the fibre.
  • Don't use petrol, white spirit or paint thinner on clothing. They are flammable, hazardous to breathe and damage many fibres and dyes.

Always follow the product label and garment care instructions. Never mix cleaning chemicals unless the product manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so.

Why This Method Works

The whole method follows from polarity. Water molecules are strongly polar and attract each other; oil molecules are non-polar. Because there is no favourable interaction between them, water cannot dissolve or carry oil, which is why a wash cycle alone fails.

Absorbent powders work by capillary action and surface area. Fine particles of cornflour, talc or baking soda present an enormous surface for liquid oil to wick onto, and because the oil is mobile while fresh, it migrates out of the fabric and into the powder, which you then brush away. No chemistry is involved, which is exactly why this step is safe on wool and silk where solvents are not.

Dish soap works through surfactants — molecules with a non-polar hydrophobic tail and a polar hydrophilic head. The tails embed themselves in the oil droplet while the heads face outward into the water, forming a micelle that keeps the oil suspended so a rinse can carry it away. Dish soap is more effective than laundry detergent for this specific job because it is designed to cut concentrated cooking grease with minimal dilution.

Warm water helps here — unlike with protein stains such as blood, where heat is destructive. Warmth reduces oil viscosity, so the grease flows more readily and surfactants penetrate it faster. The limit is the care label, and for synthetics the limit is lower, since heat sets residue into the fibre.

Finally, oxidation explains why old grease is worse. Exposed to air, unsaturated fats slowly oxidise into darker, more cross-linked compounds that behave less like liquid oil and more like a varnish. Oxygen bleach can lighten that residual colour, but it cannot undo the cross-linking — which is why acting early matters so much.

When to Call a Professional

  • Silk, wool and any dry-clean-only garment
  • Tailored, lined or structured items you cannot flush from the reverse
  • Large grease marks on upholstery or fitted carpet
