How to Remove Motor Oil and Engine Grease From Clothes

Motor oil is the hardest of the common oily stains, and it is worth understanding why before you start. Unlike cooking oil, motor oil is a refined heavy hydrocarbon blended with detergent additives, viscosity modifiers and anti-wear compounds. Used oil is worse still: it carries carbon soot, fine metal particles and combustion by-products that are physically embedded in the fluid.

That gives you three problems at once. The hydrocarbon base is non-polar and completely insoluble in water. The additives are engineered to resist breakdown. And the suspended solids are abrasive particles that lodge between fibres, where no solvent can dissolve them because they were never dissolved in the first place.

Realistically, fresh motor oil on cotton workwear usually comes out. Used black engine oil that has dried into a garment often leaves a grey shadow. Anyone promising a guaranteed clean result on that is overpromising.

What You'll Need

  • Cornflour, talcum powder, baking soda or clay-based absorbent (cat litter works for heavy deposits)
  • Clear dish soap, undiluted
  • A heavy-duty degreasing hand cleaner or citrus-based degreaser
  • Liquid laundry detergent, ideally a heavy-duty formulation
  • A dull edge and a stiff brush for sturdy fabric
  • Paper towels and white cloths
  • Warm water, within care-label limits

Avoid petrol, white spirit and paint thinner on clothing. They are flammable, hazardous to breathe, damage many fibres and dyes, and are genuinely dangerous near a dryer.

Act Quickly

  1. Blot up surface oil with paper towel. Press and lift; wiping spreads it and pushes solids deeper.
  2. Lift thick grease with a dull edge before it works into the weave.
  3. Cover the mark with absorbent powder — a thick layer, not a dusting. Leave it at least 30 minutes, or several hours for a heavy deposit. This is the highest-yield step available, because motor oil is mobile while fresh.
  4. Brush the powder off and reapply if the first layer looks saturated.
  5. Do not add water yet. Water spreads oil without dissolving it.
  6. Never tumble dry. Heat oxidises the oil and permanently sets both the stain and the odour. Oil-soaked fabric in a dryer is also a fire hazard.

Step-by-Step Removal Instructions

  1. Blot and scrape away all surface oil, then apply absorbent powder generously. Leave 30 minutes or longer, then brush off.
  2. Degrease. Apply undiluted dish soap or a citrus degreaser directly onto the mark and work it in firmly with a stiff brush on sturdy fabric, or a soft brush on lighter cloth. Leave 20–30 minutes.
  3. Rinse from the reverse of the fabric with the warmest water the care label allows. Warmth lowers oil viscosity and genuinely helps here.
  4. Repeat the degreasing step. With motor oil, one pass is almost never enough — three or four is normal, and each round removes a measurable amount.
  5. Judge the result on nearly dry fabric. Oil marks look gone while wet because water evens out light reflection, then reappear as the fabric dries.
  6. Once no further improvement occurs, launder at the warmest temperature the care label allows with a heavy-duty detergent, ideally alone rather than with other clothes.
  7. Air dry and inspect in good light before any heat.
  8. Repeat the whole cycle if progress is still being made. Persistence achieves far more than force with this stain.

Removing Motor Oil From Different Fabrics

Cotton

The most common and most treatable — workwear, overalls, T-shirts. Cotton withstands repeated degreasing, stiff brushing, warm water and heavy-duty detergent. Fresh oil usually comes out fully; used black oil often leaves a faint grey cast. See cotton care.

Denim

Polyester

The most difficult common fabric. Polyester is oleophilic — oil has a genuine affinity for the fibre itself, not merely for the gaps in the weave — so heavy hydrocarbons bond strongly. Linen

Wool

Wool takes up oil readily and cannot tolerate the aggressive treatment motor oil needs. Apply absorbent powder while completely dry and leave several hours — this is the safest and most useful step for wool, since it involves no water, heat or chemistry. Upholstery and car interiors

Absorbent powder first, left as long as practical, then vacuum. Follow with a weak degreaser solution applied on a damp cloth rather than poured, blot, and rinse by blotting with clean water. Apply absorbent powder or clay granules generously and leave several hours — even overnight — before vacuuming. This removes more than any liquid treatment. How to Remove Dried or Set-In Motor Oil

Old motor oil has oxidised and partly polymerised, and any suspended carbon and metal is now mechanically locked in.

  1. Apply absorbent powder anyway; some mobile oil usually remains. Leave several hours.
  2. Apply undiluted dish soap or a citrus degreaser and leave 30–60 minutes, keeping it moist. On a set stain dwell time matters more than anything else.
  3. Work it in with a stiff brush on sturdy fabric, then rinse from the reverse with warm water.
  4. Repeat three or four times across separate sessions. Progress is incremental and that is normal.
  5. Launder warm with a heavy-duty detergent, alone.
  6. Inspect once nearly dry, and repeat while improvement continues.

What NOT to Do

  • Don't rinse with water first. It spreads the oil and dissolves none of it.
  • Don't tumble dry. Heat sets the stain and odour, and oil-soaked fabric in a dryer is a genuine fire risk.
  • Don't judge the result while wet. Always assess on nearly dry fabric.
  • Don't wash oily workwear with the rest of the laundry. Oil transfers to other garments and to the drum.
  • Don't use petrol, white spirit, diesel or paint thinner on clothing. They are flammable, harmful to breathe, and damage many fibres and dyes.
  • Don't use chlorine bleach on oil. It does not dissolve hydrocarbons, and it damages wool, silk, elastane and coloured fabric.
  • Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia, vinegar, other acids or rubbing alcohol. These combinations can release toxic gas.
  • Don't scrub delicate fabric. Suspended metal particles are abrasive and will damage fibres under pressure.

Always follow the product label and garment care instructions. Never mix cleaning chemicals unless the product manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so.

Why This Method Works

Motor oil defeats normal laundering for three separate reasons, and the method addresses each in turn.

Polarity. The base oil is a mixture of long-chain and cyclic hydrocarbons — thoroughly non-polar. Water is strongly polar, and polar solvents do not dissolve non-polar substances. Without a surfactant bridging the two, water has no mechanism to carry oil away, no matter how hot the cycle.

Absorption comes first for a physical reason. Fine powders present an enormous surface area, and while oil remains liquid it migrates out of the fabric onto that surface by capillary action. Because no chemistry or heat is involved, this step is safe even on wool and silk. Its effectiveness depends entirely on the oil still being mobile, which is why acting quickly changes the outcome more than any product choice.

Surfactants do the chemical work. Each dish soap or degreaser molecule has a non-polar tail that buries itself in the oil and a polar head that stays in the water. Enough of them surround a droplet to form a micelle — an oil parcel with a water-compatible exterior — which a rinse then removes. Motor oil is more viscous and higher in molecular weight than cooking oil, so each pass emulsifies proportionally less of it. That is precisely why repetition, rather than force or heat, is the method. Warm water helps by reducing viscosity so surfactants can penetrate faster.

The solids are a different problem entirely. Carbon soot and metal particles in used oil were never dissolved, so no solvent can dissolve them out. They are held mechanically between fibres, and only physical flushing and agitation will shift them. This is the honest reason a grey shadow so often survives on used-oil stains: you have removed the oil successfully and what remains is embedded particulate — the same limitation described in mud stains.

Finally, oxidation explains why old stains resist treatment. Exposed to air and heat, hydrocarbons oxidise and cross-link into darker, more resinous compounds that behave less like a fluid and more like a varnish, which no surfactant can emulsify.

When to Call a Professional

  • Silk, wool and any dry-clean-only garment
  • Lined or tailored items you cannot flush from the reverse
